Social Dynamic Tour To Anandwan Hemalkasa Somanth on Republic Day

Anandwan....Forest of happiness

#baba_amte

Someone said that "Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is Beautiful; That is Extra-ordinary;"

Needless to say, everyone at some point of their lives has heard about Amte family's remarkable social projects. Anandwan is the realization of a dream of one man - Baba Amte and his team of volunteers. Founded in 1948 and registered in 1951, Anandwan today is a self contained village. These people, once rejected by society, are now socially independent and have set the world standard for rehabilitation and have coordinated some of the most daring social and ecological programs in India. Anandwan today has two hospitals, a college, an orphanage, a school for the blind, a school for the deaf and a technical wing. More than 5,000 people are dependent on it for their livelihood. Anandwan is not just a rehabilitation centre where thousands of leprosy afflicted and physically challenged find food and shelter, but it is also a school from where they learn lessons of self-help, self-respect and selfless service.

Dr. Vikas Amte, Baba Amte's elder son, is the chief functionary at Anandwan.

#hemalkasa

Baba visited Hemalkasa, Gadchiroli in 1973 and found the condition of the Madia Gond tribe there to be appalling. The area was completely cut off from civilization. Illiteracy being a total and medical care completely unheard of, malnutrition, leprosy, malaria and tuberculosis were rife. Lok Biradari Prakalp (LBP) was started on 23rd December 1973 by Baba Amte for the integrated development of the primitive tribe ‘Madia-Gonds’. The members of this tribe, residing in the deep forests of Gadchiroli district, were living the life of animals; deprived of the necessities of life, totally neglected by the rest of the world. Baba’s younger son Dr. Prakash Amte and his wife Dr. Mandakini Amte volunteered to work among the Madias.

There was no electricity and no connectivity with the outer world when both Dr. Prakash & wife Dr. Mandakini and other colleagues of theirs volunteered here to work among the Madias. Electricity came into this area in the year 1995, telephone connection on 3rd September 1998 and internet connection in November 2003.

Amte's Animal Orphanage or the 'Amte's Animal Ark' is a must visit here.
The history of the Animal Ark is yet another story of a special bond between man and nature. The Ark is an orphanage for young wild animals, whose parents have been killed by the tribal people only for food and not for fun or entertainment. It began with a baby monkey, whose mother had been killed for a meal.

Baba had envisioned Somnath to be a village where cured leprosy patients could live together and build a village with their own blood, sweat and toil.

Somnath has now become a village of Mahatma Gandhi’s dreams with its own bio-diversity, abundant water and a rich culture.Somnath is spread over 1250 acres. It is the food-bowl of MSS. Along with intensive modern farming spread over 750 acres, fishery, dairy-farming and dry-land horticulture are also practiced here.

Present day Somnath has about 550 residents, most leprosy patients, and 1,000 acres of 1,300 acres which Baba Amte was allowed to retain, is cultivated.
